Biography

Before becoming a successful performance poet, workshop leader scriptwriter and founder of Write Out Loud poetry organisation, my earlier career was in teaching and training: primary, secondary FE and HE, then organisation development consultancy and coaching. I am a qualified teacher and have an MA (scriptwriting) and an MSC (human resource development by research), as well as a Euresform European Trainers Diploma awarded by Lancaster University. I also founded small publisher Blooming Media, which creates corporate video and publishes easy-read educational resources for health and education.

Publications & Performance History

Performance Julian has performed across the North West of England, in London and in the Gironde region of France, having organised and run several bilingual poetry events in Bordeaux and performed at local festivals. He was invited to perform twice at the Bolton Mushaira by the Gujarati Writers Guild UK. Compering I have established monthly poetry events in Bolton, Wigan, Middleton, Sale, Stockport, Oldham and Marsden, Huddersfield;have been commissioned to compere slams and other events in many northern towns, including the BBC slam heat in Manchester. He created the Marsden Jazz Festival’s Poetry Jam, no win its fourth year, and is producer of and performer in The Beat is Back, a beat and jazz poetry show premiering in October 2013. Publication As a performance poet, Julian does not seek publication, though his poetry is published alongside that of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen in Heart Shoots anthology. He has published a number of non-fiction titles for Higher Education, social services and healthcare. Scriptwriting Julian wrote the short film, To The Sea Again, starring Jean Alexander and Ciaran Griffiths, which played at several film festivals and was a finalist at the Angel festival in London and Moondance, Hollywood. Workshop & Reading Experience

His popular workshops for libraries and festivals include: Introduction to Scriptwriting, Writing and Performing Poetry, and Beginning Creative Writing. Clients for these have included Stockport, Bolton and Kirklees library services, Wigan Words Festival and Marsden Jazz Festival, and a week-long course created for the Arvon Foundation.
