Biography

‘Caroline Smailes and Will Self are arch-experimentalists.’ Observer

Caroline Smailes’ acclaimed debut novel, IN SEARCH OF ADAM, was published in 2007 (The Friday Project/HarperCollins). The Big Issue North declared the book ‘an engrossing and touching read from a new talent’. Since then Caroline has written four additional novels. These include BLACK BOXES, international bestseller LIKE BEES TO HONEY, an experimental digital novel with eleven endings 99 REASONS WHY and modern day fairy tale THE DROWNING OF ARTHUR BRAXTON (all HarperCollins). The film of THE DROWNING OF ARTHUR BRAXTON is in post-production, with an expected spring 2018 release.

Caroline lives in the North West of England. She is also known as Caroline Wallace (THE FINDING OF MARTHA LOST). She is head of book editing at BubbleCow.

Workshop & Reading Experience

Readings at various Literary festivals and events. Given workshops across the country and abroad on several topics, focusing on building convincing characters, perfecting place and writing short stories. Given workshops in various schools, linking with GCE coursework requirements (I have a certificate in adult teaching and have worked freelance with AQA’s English Language subject office for several years) and worked as a lecturer in creative writing at university. I have worked as an editor and as a reader for several publishers. I have judged several competitions, edited anthologies and given one-to-one mentoring to a large number of writers.

Other information

With a background as an editor, as well as a writer, I’m keen to run workshops on all aspects of writing and self-editing. I can also offer workshops on building the writer platform through social media and all forms of creative networking.
