Last night would have seen our first two New Words events take place with Saraband Books and Marion Dunn, author of the Boxing Diaries at Bolton Central Library and Jordan Taylor Jones from Dead Ink Books at Northwich Library. Sadly, Time to Read had to cancel the New Words summer 2020 events programme, owing to the critical Covid-19 situation and the Government’s new limits on public gatherings.
We’re immensely proud of the New Words project and events programme and Time to Read would like to say thanks to Arts Council England for funding the project. We are grateful to the project coordinator Dr. Andrew Forster for all his work and we thank Kim Hubball for her beautiful artwork, which we hope you will see soon.
Huge thanks go out to the five amazing publishing houses in the project: Saraband, Comma, Knives Forks and Spoons, Carcanet and Dead Ink. Our publishing partners worked really hard with librarians Kate, Steph, Joanne, Sam and Jayne to create a New Words long list and shortlist plus an exciting twenty two event programme. Thank you to the authors and poets and publishers who planned to visit libraries from Cheshire to Cumbria including Michelle Green, Dr James Davis, Jacob Ross, Martyn Bedford, Martina Evans, Marion Dunn, Catherine Czerkawska, Jordan Taylor Jones, Claire O’Callaghan, Alan Baker, Sophie Franklin & Adelle Hey.
We are extremely sad that the New Words programme cannot take place in libraries this summer. We miss you, and hope that you, our library members, readers, writers, publishers and library staff, stay well and safe. If you are only just finding out about the New Words project, you can still read the books from the New Words collection and browse all the titles – it makes a great reading list!
Library buildings may be closed but our virtual doors are wide open. Libraries have increased their ebook and audiobook download collections and many are running online events and activities. You can find out more at #LibrariesFromHome on the Libraries Connected website.
Publishers are still selling books and we urge you to support independent publishers at this time more than ever. Visit their online bookshops below, order books and enjoy some fantastic reading, whilst we all wait for the world to reopen.
