Kick Down the Barriers writing commissions

Four £200 writing commissions are available, as part of the ‘Kick Down the Barriers’ project in conjunction with Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery. KDTB has emerged following both the 2016 ‘Casey Review Report’ and the 2018 BBC Panorama programme that labelled Blackburn as one of the most segregated towns in Britain.

The four commissions will be responding to the impact that the COVID-19 lockdown has had on Blackburn, and will help to record changes within its communities preserving an important moment in Blackburn’s Social History. We would be particularly interested in the exploration into the history of Blackburns public health, as well as narratives around special cultural events and moments that have occurred in this time of COVID-19.

Ideally the successful candidates will know Blackburn well, and will have existing contacts with groups or individuals who either live or work in Blackburn, either online or over the phone. We want the written pieces to authentically reflect the town and its communities, and so speaking to local people to hear their stories, experiences and reflections as part of this work is crucial.
